Bat For Lashes Played Bowery Ballroom

Kicking off the show with a powerful performance of “Glass” from her new album Two Suns, Natasha Khan, aka Bat for Lashes, put on an amazing performance at Bowery Ballroom last night (4/30).  While she spent the majority of the show at the keyboard, Khan also played guitar, maracas, bells, tambourine, some kind of harp and even a bit of accordion throughout a set that showcased the mystical songs of her last two albums. Khan unleashed her stunning voice ranging between highs and lows and sounded far superior live than on record.  Her stage presence and set design added to the songs as well as she danced with confidence across a stage decorated with a sparkling curtain, vintage dolls and kitchy lamps.  Her “new” band featured tight tribal drums (Sarah Jones), keyboards/synths (Ben Christophers) and a bassist who also played guitar and added drums (Charlotte Hatherly).  Khan and Christophers performed a stripped down version of her latest single “Daniel” early in the set only to have the entire band reprise it for the second encore of the night.

I’ve seen several indie songstresses in the past year including Lykke Li, Little Boots, Fan Death, Golden Filter and Lily Allen but Natasha Khan’s songs, voice, musicianship and stage presence outdid them all.  Expect big things from her over the next several years.

She plays the Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn tomorrow night (5/2).  Highly recommended.  The rest of her upcoming tour dates are listed after the jump.
