Mastodon played Irving Plaza
Mastodon, the heavy-metal heavy-hitters from Atlanta, played their latest album, Crack the Skye, from start to finish last night at Irving Plaza (5/9). It was packed. It was hot. It was loud. It was 90% dudes. For the first part of the show, on the video screens behind them played a film that looked something like Dungeons and Dragons the movie, with druids and sorcerers flailing among fire and mist. The album, their most accessible yet, is a mix of metal and hard rock…and it sounded great live. All players were in top form, but drummer Brann Dailor’s skills on the kit were remarkable. After finishing Crack the Skye, they moved onto material from each of their three previous albums which amounted to an amazing set of raging, sweaty metal.
I ran into a friend at the end of the show. He told me it was his 16th time seeing the band and that this was their best performance hands down. He also raved about Kylesa who played directly prior to Mastodon. I missed them, but won’t next time.
Brooklyn Vegan posted some great photos here. More of my photos after the jump.
