Benjy Ferree played Maxwell’s

September 7, 2009

IMG_4456I don’t remember the last time I’ve seen a band with huge potential but no songs.  That’s the category that Benjy Ferree fell into Friday night (9/4) at Maxwell’s.  Set up as a two-piece with Benjy handling guitar/vocals/keys and his drummer working the kit/keys/back-up vocals, they played a mixture of rock and soul that kept reminding me of the Enchantment Under the Sea Dance from Back to the Future.  I don’t necessarily mean that as a dig or a compliment, it’s just what kept coming to mind.

The vocals and the playing were excellent, but they had trouble delivering a hook.  The songs were largely forgettable but their potential was evident.  I look forward to seeing them on their next album cycle to see if they can write the songs that their chops deserve.

By the way, Maxwell’s is probably the most underrated place to see a show in the NYC area.  Such a great hang.

    Agreed. Maxwell’s deserves serious props.
