Soul Train

January 9, 2010

Created and hosted by the one-of-a-kind Don Cornelius, Soul Train was one of the longest running television programs in history with new episodes running consistently from 1971 to 2006 featuring everyone from The Jackson 5, Aretha Franklin and Kurtis Blow to Whitney Houston, Justin Timberlake and Beyonce .  While the show is no longer on the air, video clips from the shows have been archived on the Soul Train Fans  youtube channel.  I’ve recently gotten hooked on these videos, especially ones from the early 70’s which feature vintage soul, funk and disco and more importantly some of the most jaw-dropping dance moves (and outfits) I’ve ever seen.  It was recently announced that Time-Life will release a DVD series of the show.

Check out Curtis Mayfield perform “Get Down” in 1972 below and prepare to be amazed.
