Peter Gabriel played Radio City Music Hall with a 54-piece orchestra (night 1)

May 3, 2010

Backed by a stunning LED lighting design and a full orchestra, Peter Gabriel played two sets at Radio City Music Hall last night (5/2).  The first set consisted of covers from his new album, Scratch My Back, while the second set focused on his own material.  Video of Peter’s take on Bon Iver‘s “Flume” below.  I know Lou Reed was in the house, but he didn’t come out on stage by the time I had to split.  The show was a bit subdued for my taste, but Peter Gabriel’s vocals paired with the orchestra seemed to have the sold-out crowd transfixed.  He plays Radio City again tonight (also sold out).  Set list after the jump.

The “Instrumental” was “The Nest That Sailed The Sky” from “Ovo”. Lou Reed did not make an appearance on stage. Loved the show, thought the audience was rather ill-mannered (as the night wore on, the largely “too old to rock ‘n roll, too young to die” crowd got nicely plastered on Radio City cocktails, including the “Sledgehammer” special. My 16 year old, respectfully in awe (and still pinching himself that he actually got to see Peter live) was appalled – lol.

No shortage of morons in the house last night. Two jackasses in the second mezzanine insisted on “enhancing” every dramatic moment with one of those shrill high pitched whistles. Another jackass thought it was a good idea to provide loud running commentary on every song selection – along with a request for Biko every third or fourth song. Overheard in the men’s room during intermission – “dude, where’s the band? When is this thing gonna rock?” Unbelievable. All the more reason to stay home and save your money for the inevitable DVD.
